I finally made it—after running frantically around JFK airport thinking I’d missed my flight, to a 6-hour time change that had me at severe jet lag—I arrived with my boots on the ground in Oslo, Norway, ready for my first Norwegian Airbnb experience!
I was greeted with lots of snow upon arrival, dragging my heavy suitcase through the heaps of slush. Think of it as a nightmare—especially after being lost for a good hour. Did I mention to pack light?
The first couple of days I stayed at the Scandic Holberg Hotel in Oslo. It was fairly affordable in price compared to the other options and in such a central location, close to the Royal Palace!
One thing to note, Norway isn’t the cheapest for travelers. I knew that I would need to stay somewhere more affordable for part of my destination to Bergen, Norway. So, why not give Airbnb a try?
AIRBNB 101: For those who don’t know how Airbnb works, it’s a place for people to list, find and rent lodging. It has over 1,500,000 listings in 34,000 cities and 190 countries, so you’re guaranteed to find something! Not only will you get the chance of living like a local, you can find prices that meet any budget.
Two things I look for when booking Airbnb:
- Female host is a must.
Rooming with a random male stranger is not an option in my book, especially when traveling alone. Luckily, I found an American girl living in Bergen, so I reached out to her before the booking process.
- Good reviews. Period.
I depend on the reviews to make sure I’m staying with someone credible. I suggest even doing your own investigating just to have a piece of mind. guests and hosts are verified through their social networks and an official id for the safety of Airbnb’s Community.
Let’s just say it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I was able to stick to my budget and I met someone new who could help me navigate around the city. Good hosts will always make sure your stay is pleasant, and they’re a great source of contact for any questions you may have. This is definitely a great option for those on a budget or traveling alone!
